Question:
I am interested in putting together a Stage Actors Guild in Michigan and am having a very difficult time figuring out where to start. I need to know how a guild differs from just a volunteer group, and so on. Are there laws and/or guidelines in Michigan for guilds? Are they specific to city or township? Any info you may have would be great.

Answer:
I believe in its common usage today, a guild is an association of people with a common goal. Here I would recommend that you form a Michigan Not For Profit Corporation and give it the name you want such as "Stage Actors Guild of Rockford", if you are a charitable organization you can then file for an IRS 501c3 designation. If you just do good things and are not primarily charitably focused, then you do not need to file for the 501C3 status.
