Improve Homestead Without Affecting Father's Finan

Question: Dad is 95 & lives in a nursing home (Medicare/Medicaid pays & his SS pays) no cost to us. I would like to improve the homestead, sell it and buy another house in Stevensville. Can I do this without jeopardizing Dad's financial position? Answer: I would not recommend improving your father's home at this time. Generally, never invest in and improve a property until you are the titled owner. Also, if you sell your father's homestead, then you will have to use the money to pay for his nursing home care. Also, I have seen too many people who have improved property that other family members had promised to transfer to them and then lost all their investment when the transfer did not take place. Question: Is there anyway legally that other interested parties (my sister, or dad's grandchildren) can contest the will and property and attach the improved Homestead or present home in Chikaming, Sawyer, Michigan, after he passes?

Answer: Simply, yes. Heirs always have the right to contest a will. This does not mean they will succeed, but a court will probably listen to any complaints they have and then decide. You may win or lose. See above about not improving any property you do not own.
